The military’s experiments with Twitter

On August 3rd, 2009 United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) signed an order which officially banned the use of social networking sites (SNS) on Marines Corps. Enterprise Network. Marines stationed allover the world who had previously communicated with collegues, fellow soldiers, friends, and family via social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and Myspace using their workstations were set back approx. 10 years to when they had only telephones and minimal use of computer networks.
Although the ban may only last one year if studies rule out the risk, it will give the Marines a late start in a technology that is currently exploding. The order reads: “INTERNET SNS ARE DEFINED AS WEB-BASED SERVICES THAT ALLOW COMMUNITIES OF PEOPLE TO SHARE COMMON INTERESTS AND/OR EXPERIENCES (EXISTING OUTSIDE OF DOD NETWORKS) OR FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO EXPLORE INTERESTS AND BACKGROUND DIFFERENT FROM THEIR OWN.” Some exceptions do exist; these include military sponsored blogs that are hosted on military servers and waivers that must be approved by several different authorities and departments including IT. One of the first things I’ve done to find military related Twitter handles is to just do a simple search on Google for ‘military twitter’. Through this search I found milblogging.com, a site dedicated to military blogs and micro-blogs. Milblogging.com has the largest directory of blogs (currently 2,378) on the Internet and thus is extremely useful.
I’ve also used the search option on Twitter and just surfed through handles that looked interesting but this is quite time consuming.
For now I’ll stick to what I find on milblogging.com and the other handles I gathered through my requests via Twitter.

I picked most of the following thought leaders because over the last few weeks I’ve been following them and seen a lot of useful information for my vertical on military micro-blogging.
@veryuseful – Well its all in the name! I met Darren down in Portland at Rose-fest a few weeks before I started using Twitter. Darren is likely one of the most active Auxiliary PA’s in the district and provides a lot of the photography used for national publications. Because of his involvement he has met more pioneers in gov. social media than I could ever hope to!
@afpadude – Another military PA officer. Suggested by @joyrenee at her presentation to our class. Often tweets about the restrictions the gov. places on social media and suggestions for what should be done.
@joyrenee – Social media guru for GSA. Lots of useful info about gov. transitioning to social media.
@mixtmedia – Gov’t 2.0 proponent. Researches the “convergence of media, innovation, communications, society and technology”. -WP
@AHEFoundation – Not sure who the author is but I found them after several searches for military twitter accounts. The posts seem to be very social media oriented and again, lots of useful info.

The entire experience I have received in this fine class over the past five weeks has been one big “Ah-Ha!” moment for me. Because I had never used Twitter before, just the fact that I’m on there tweeting and interested is an accomplishment for me!
The most recent time-saver I found is saving my posts using favorites on Tweetdeck. This stops me from bringing it up in conversation without having the actual post or taking a long time to find it. Also realized you could use Tweetdeck for mentions! One thing that’s blowing my mind is the amount of functionality that tools like CoTweet have because of Twitter’s open-source architecture. What if they all got together and created one big desktop application? Seems like just in the past year these desktop/web/mobile apps have exploded so I imagine its not far away.

1. Follow the experts
Today while doing a Google search I ran accoss @tweetexperts. While they are not quite experts when it comes to creating a background, they tweet about some very cool stuff such as Twitter statistics, APIs, and strategies. I would venture to say that most companies are following experts on Twitter yet they dont pay any attention to the messages. Tweetdeck offers an easy way of staying current on multiple users and also has an add to favorites option for those tweets you need to save for later.
Its hard to tell what companies actually do this, but following people such as @kegill will yield lots of helpful info! Continue Reading…

(1) WHY this site? Stumbled upon ST_TravelLight when looking for information about when the Light Rail opens. Thought it was an interesting concept to create a Twitter handle for a specific mode of transportation.

I’ve liked Vans since the 6th grade and Nikki seems to be one of the most forward thinkers there when it comes to social media.

The last two chapters of Cass Sunstein’s book didn’t bring a lot of new information to the table but provided focus to his otherwise universal claim that technology and market economics has empowered us to think differently. While I understand the notion of web 2.0/open sources code and its increasingly complex web applications, I’m still trying to determine when prediction markets are appropriate for aggregating information and when they are nothing more than a horse race.
Toward the end of chapter six an attempt is made to tell people “when silence is golden”. It doesn’t appear that this venture could possibly be successful when people who provide nonsense due to their ignorance have no idea they’re doing it. I do agree that polarization sometimes leads in the right direction but often times there is a very thin line between ignorance and creativity. As talked about in David Beer and Roger Burrow’s online article, Sociology and, of and in Web 2.0: Some Initial Considerations, utility can be found in mass online communication via a Web 2.0 world in that a large portion of this communication, or information, is searchable. Whether you’re an individual who wants to start a new brand or a government entity, you have the unparalleled power of information at very little cost, if any. I think it is a great idea for everyone to educate himself or herself on a topic before expressing an opinion but they also need to keep talking. Sunstein likely could have made a better argument by stating that people who follow the lost can cause dramatic problems in a real-time framework like the Internet.
