Wow! I have two really early adopters in this class! Who started you at age 10 and what did you do online then?
My apologies in advance…
Perhaps I misunderstood the assignment, but this seems to be more of a review of the content than a comparison and analysis. The second and third paragraphs served as fine summaries of the content of the article. Paragraph four was the entirety of the analysis. As the articles came at the topic differently, I can see how it might be difficult to do an analysis of content, but I do not see much depth in analysis of quality or what types of things either type of article does well.
I’m actually one of the 700,000 (guilty!). I recently signed up for a Netflix account so I could take advantage of the streaming to my Xbox 360. First impression? Truly awesome. I’m a pretty avid believer in downloading my TV and movies so I can watch them on my schedule, and now I can do it legally with Netflix. I think this just proves the point that most people who download media (like thru BitTorrent) aren’t inherently looking to break the law, they just want the convenience that traditional television doesn’t offer. The only drawback so far to Netflix is the limited number of titles available thru the service, but given the kind of growth that you cited above, it’s hard to believe that this isn’t going to quickly become a dominant channel for media/content delivery.
Oh,wow, Corey — I didn’t plan on your having to spend hours on one site. I’m sorry!
I think it’ll be really interesting to see how mobile broadcasting evolves and if it becomes a part of the everyday way we consume media… I really like the idea of having unrestricted (or at least less restricted) local cell broadcasting for programs of local and regional interest!
It’s a cool technology, that’s for sure. But maybe it’s just me – I don’t like having to watch a whole video when I can just read an article. And as things like the iPhone and BlackBerry make reading easier on mobile devices, I wonder if mobile video will truly make an impact. I could be way off, but I think audio-only podcasts are much more popular than the video podcasts for mobile users because of where and when they are consumed.
I am sad that I missed your presentation. It was very different, in a good way, from the three presentations I saw. I think mobile broadcasting is an amazing new technology especially for traffic news or weather. I also feel it will be a “critical part of news outlets business model”.
I’m not sure how I feel about this. I find that we are gravitating too hard towards having everything at our fingertips and I have question the necessity. It just seems to be too much all at once. if there is an argument that actually proves that there is a social need for this than maybe I will support it. But in the mean time I think checking the internet during your lunch break should suffice.
I am pretty sure that this is going to be a technology that ends up in a way different spot than the prognosticators and backers have envisioned. Plain old 3G or LTE will do much of what I have seen in the pipe for this so far, but I have not seen a whole lot that takes advantage of locality.
Thank you for the presentation!
Your presentation was really interesting and it made me wonder how far mobile technology can go. I’m thinking like how they made a UMD for the Playstation Portable (PSP) that alows owners to watch a full feature length film on the PSP maybe they’ll make a full feature length film on an SD or something that you can plug into your Mobile phone. Even streaming technology may be getting much better, and your presentation did a great job examining the future posibilities of the mobile phone.
I wish I caught this presentation. The whole concept of mobile broadcasting escapes me. It’s like having a TV follow you around wherever you go. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a luddite by any means. I think technology has greatly improved my life. Without the internet in particular, I wouldn’t have nearly the amount of freedom that I now enjoy. But jeez, when we’re outdoors and presumably engaged in our surroundings and the community, can’t we please put down our electronic devices??
I didn’t even know that there were competitors with flash. Your assignment actually taught me something new. Silverlight technology is new to me so reading about it was interesting. As far as the technical jargon, I would be completely lost, I am glad that the site on wiki had quick links to definitions to those words so that readers like myself can have an easier time. My wiki page did the same thing and actually linked the pages to the cites they found them on for information. Good job!
The concept of mobile broadcasting in the terms that you discussed and presented it was a completely new idea for me. I think that you did a really great job presenting and explaining it. I am excited to keep and eye on what the companies will do with this technology and new idea in the next few years. Thank you for introducing this to me!
I also had no idea that there was competitors of flash. It will be interesting to see how people respond to it as it continues to grow. For so long there had been no other choices out there and for such a prominenet company to finally develop something comprable, I was suprised at the possible oppostition of such a product. Wiki is a great tool to give a background to a concept such as this and they make it readable to people who have no idea how it works.
What an interesting way to connect these two articles!
My dilema in getting the Iphone has been a long drawn out one. I have the at&t tilt which is a touchscreen knock off of the iphone. I too have wondered why they have not come down in price or been upgraded. Skype is an awesome alternative that I use frequently. One question that I pose is how much have the stocks of the other cell phone companies have dropped versus Nokias because of the economy?
I do feel that I am part of the digital divide. I can’t afford any additional plan to the current phone I have so buying a smart phone is not even an option for me. I don’t have internet yet, but I can use my laptop at school. The digital divide is so big and unfair and just like the elites had education because they had money this divide does affect the society. As far as your thesis goes,
I would suggest that you you elaborate on the different rates that are currently out there. I was not persuaded by your essay but it was informative.
Hi,
corey-christiansen.com – da best. Keep it going!
Cool!
Hi! I like your article and I would like very much to read some more information on this issue. Will you post some more?
Hello,
Where are you from? Is it a secret?
Seattle, WA!
Great idea, Corey. Web presence is important, and multiple formats/ways to access the book will appeal to different readers. Related to your idea about interviews/promo/documentary–would also be good to document this process not just through blogs, but through photo and video. You never know what we may want to use later.
Thanks for the review! I want to say – thank you for this!
Hey very nice blog!! Man .. Beautiful .. Amazing .. I will bookmark your blog and take the feeds also…
